Robert Lubisch, a doctor and a scientist, makes an unsettling discovery after his father’s death: in a desk drawer he finds a box full of SS documents and a photograph of a beautiful young woman. Could his father, who was always supremely correct, have had a lover? On the back of the picture he finds the name of a photography studio in the town Kranenburg, near Munster. Robert embarks on a quest to discover the truth about his father’s past.
Mechthild Borrman tells this story from the present, with flashbacks to the 1940s and 1950s. With precision and yet full of compassion the author tells us of a time when moral decisions required a great deal of courage. The main character Robert Lubisch unearths a terrible crime that had no legal consequences in that time. The themes in the novel – long shadows from the past, guilt and broken trust, manipulation and treason – are all touched by love.
