The Spanish Rider

Lidewey van Noord &

On the day the Vuelta passes through the province of West-Brabant, a famous Spanish cyclist causes a crash with serious consequences for his biggest rival. Almost immediately afterwards, the Spanish rider himself gets off track. Hours later, a farmer finds him injured and half unconscious on the roadside. He takes the rider into his house. Temporarily, he thinks. But the cyclist, consumed by self-doubt and guilt, does not seem to have any intention of leaving the farm any time soon.

In an accurate, evocative style, Van Noord depicts two men in the Brabant countryside sheltering from the outside world, and from themselves. The Spanish Rider is an elegantly told, deeply human story about desire, loneliness and the question of how to relate to the expectations of others.
